John Wood 4R100 Valve Body 7.3L Powerstroke 1996-2003

We offer modified accumulator valve bodies from John Wood Automotive because it is our experience that they are one of the best offered in the industry.  John Wood has been building transmissions and valve bodies since 1983 and has a reputation for strong attention to detail, quality before quantity and excellent customer service.

A JW Valve Body will help to firm up shifting, while keeping the shifts crisp and not banging into gear.  Also performs shorter shift duration, which decreases heat generated and reduces slippage and wear on the friction plates. While the valve body can be used with stock programming, we suggest a PHP Hydra if you are thinking of upgrading.

Please note that there is a 4 week window for core returns from when you receive the shipment.  If the core isn't received back 30 days from customer receipt then your core charge will be forfeited.

Core Shipping Options:

  • Pre-Ship Core - This allows you to ship your used cores in first without have to pay a core charge. Your order will ship once your cores are received.
  • Return After Install - This is the quickest option to get your valve body. You pay the core fee up front and then it is refunded once the core is returned.
1994-2003 4R100 Transmission This part is unable to be returned after received.

    JW VB

Posted by Grant Donnelly on Oct 30th 2024

Clay and the RR team are top notch, John Woods not so much the last few years. This is the second sub par JW product.
    Installed and had no second gear. Removed after about 50 miles to find the second gear accumulator piston stuck. I disassembled to inspect and found the core had been impacted and slightly oblonged the 2nd gear accumulator bore. Once apart i saw the JW VB mods are the;
Sonnax 36948-18k accumulator spring kit $37
Sonnax 4r100-LB1 line booster kit $38

So for $80 in Sonnax parts and a defective core I have a hard time justifying the price. Yes they do crisp up the shifts just like Sonnax advertisements.

    Much better than OEM

This is how the 4R100 is supposed to drive. Best update to the truck yet. Smooth, quicker upshifts and downshifts.
Install was pretty straight forward. It what you think it is... messy but not bad.

    One of the best upgrades!

Posted by Jeff on Mar 27th 2024

Hands down one of the best upgrades I’ve done to my truck. I wasn’t real impressed with it when I first installed it but after changing my tunes on my Hydra to the “modified valve body” tunes it made a big difference. Feels like much more of the engine’s power is making it to the wheels now. This should be one of the very first upgrades for any 7.3 owner. Shipping was fast and installation was simple. Just make sure you don’t tear the black valve body gasket or you will be taking a lot more apart than you wanted. Highly recommend for anyone with a 4R100! Way less slippage and much firmer shifts.

Messy but easy install over all. Shifting is much improved, feels like a new transmission.

Instructions were very confusing regarding application. This cost me money.

    Great upgrade for OEM trans

Good improvement to any stock transmission. If you're doing upgrades do yourself a favor and don't ignore the transmission.

    JOHN WOOD 4R100 VALVE BODY

Wow, all I can say is Wow! I had a horrible 3-4 shift flare as well as inconsistent shifts from 1-2 (some times normal, sometime hard) and this product smooth everything out and eliminated ths shift flare altogether! I am truly amazed. The truck shifts as smooth as a silk! I am in love with the truck again. Would highly recommend this product. Thanks to riffraff diesel for the quick shipping and technical support. A first class outfit!

    John wood valve body

Replaced original valve body with JW valve body because of no 2-3 shift. Had random sticking problems for almost a year now not putting the valve body as suspect. Replaced 2 sets of solenoid packs, dropped the pan several times, never finding any problems. About a month ago completely lost 2nd gear, thought it was transmission failure. Then the other day it randomly started shifting into 2nd. Dropped the pan, pulled the valve body and disassembled it. The paint on the valve springs, big yellow spring and big green spring, was flacking off the springs!!! The valves has scrape marks from trying to eat the paint. Soaked the springs in brake clean and removed all the paint and cleaned the valve body. Reassembled and after over a year of problems it shifts like a dream. Always inspect your products even if it's from a reputable source.

    Improved Shifting

This is how it should have been from the factory. Much better shifts, and no flare.
